Bargny: The Real Face of Economic Emergence is a web documentary depicting the negative effects of the Senegalese government’s “Emerging Senegal Plan” on a fishing community north of Dakar, where residents have opposed major development projects that jeopardize their local economy and social organization for many years. The latest mega-projects are a coal plant as well as a mineral and bulk port, threatening to deprive villagers of both their land and, through environmental destruction, the fish that constitute their primary income. Facing coastal erosion at the same time, the community finds itself under attack from all sides. This documentary shows their realities while philosophically reflecting on a development model that pushes social and environmental issues into the background, yet continues to be defended even today.
